An average person over 15 years old sleeps over eight hours a night. If you think in terms of a lifetime of sleep time, then we spend nearly a third of our lives sleeping! Having a good bed, bed springs and mattress is a very important and long-lasting investment. Bed sets, including a headboard, box springs and mattress, can cost thousands of dollars, so it is important to protect your investment. A properly maintained bed set can last decades. Mattresses and box springs can last at least 10-15 years with good care. It is important to keep your mattresses and bed sets in good condition when you are moving or placing them in storage, so you can continue to use them for many years to come.
Mattress Moving & Storage Tips
We spend over 1/3rd of our lives sleeping, so it is important to keep mattresses and bed sets in great condition. Below are eight tips to keep a mattress in good condition during moving or storage:
- Avoid storing mattresses in the basement. Basements can be damp, which could damage the mattress. Keep mattresses away from pets and sharp objects.
- Consider renting a climate-controlled storage unit to store your mattress. Extreme temperatures and humidity can create moisture, which can in turn damage your mattress. If you need to store a mattress in a regular storage unit, it is a good idea to invest in a dehumidifier to keep the storage unit dry.
- Before moving or storing a mattress, be sure to thoroughly clean the mattress. Use upholstery cleaner on the actual mattress and then vacuum both sides. Clean the bed frame with oil soap and water before moving or placing in storage.
- Disassemble the bed set for moving or storage. Keep all screws/nuts/bolts in a plastic bag taped to the frame or headboard for safe keeping. Cover the bed frame and headboard with old blankets during transit and storage to protect from dust and damage.
- Invest in a mattress cover to protect the mattress while it is in storage. Cover the entire mattress with a breathable plastic cover. These usually cost $20 or less at stores. Secure the cover with tape and cover any holes or tears in the cover.
- Storing a mattress in a climate controlled storage unit is recommended to help against moisture growth due to extreme temperature and humidity levels. If you are not able to store in a climate controlled storage unit, then it is recommended to place a dehumidifier in the storage unit to keep the unit dry.
- If you are storing a mattress long-term, store it flat in the storage unit. It is okay to move the mattress on its side, but for storage, it is better to store flat as the coils and inner workings could shift with storing on the side over a long period of time. When storing on the ground in a storage unit, lay a tarp on the ground and place the covered mattress on the ground. You can also store the mattress on top of flat furniture.
- Do not store anything on top of a mattress. Heavy items can cause damage to the mattress material as well as could damage the mattress springs and create more wear and tear on the mattress.
- Once you are ready to remove the mattress from storage, freshen up the mattress before use. Sprinkle baking soda on both sides of the mattress. Allow baking soda to sit so it could absorb any odors and then remove the baking soda by a vacuum.

The number one resolution in the Statistic Brain poll was losing weight with number five being staying fit and healthy. If you decided to change your lifestyle by losing weight, exercising or developing a workout program, then you will need to purchase sporting equipment and supplies. Once you have reached your goal or have decided to stop your exercise program then you will need a place to store all of that sporting or exercise equipment. If you do not have the extra room, then renting a self storage unit is a great storage solution for storing your sports and fitness equipment outside of your home.
Tips for Properly Storing Exercise Equipment
In order to keep exercise and fitness equipment in good working order, it is important to follow the right storage preparation steps. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for any other specific information that you might need to know before storing. When placing your fitness or sports equipment in a storage unit, make sure that it is properly cleaned. Keep weights stored on a rack with the lighter weights on top and the heavier weights on the bottom. Cover the weight rack with a canvas cover to prevent dust accumulation. Self storage is also a great place to store elliptical or treadmills when they are not in use. These fitness machines should also be covered with a canvas during long-term storage. The holiday season is now a memory. It is now time to take down the Christmas decorations and return your home back to its “normal” organization. To make sure that your holiday decorations are stored correctly, so you can use them for years to come, there are a few things that you should do. Make sure that you have the proper packing supplies such as boxes, newsprint and packaging tape in order to store you holiday decorations. Stop N Stor offers a wide variety of moving and packing supplies to help you with packing needs for ornaments, candles, holiday dishes and displays. Holiday ornaments are usually sentimental and some ornaments are handed down from generation to generation. So, it is important that these items are stored properly. An artificial Christmas tree can be quite hard to store, depending on the size of the tree. In order to reduce the amount of clutter and excess items in a home, consider storing holiday items in self storage. A self storage unit will allow you to use the much needed storage space in your home for items that you need to use more often than once a year. Below are a few tips for storing your holiday trees and ornaments in order to keep them fresh looking for years to come.
Artificial Christmas Tree Storage Ideas
Artificial Christmas trees are durable, but you need to make sure that your Christmas tree is stored correctly, so you can use them for years to come. Before your store your tree, check out the manufacturer’s instructions for storage recommendations. Some manufacturers might recommend storing the trees taken apart, while others recommend keeping the tree fully assembled. One of the best and easiest ways to storage an artificial Christmas tree is fully assembled, because it usually takes a lot of time and work to put up and take down a Christmas tree each holiday season. However, an assembled tree does take up a lot of storage space. Placing the fully assembled in an artificial Christmas tree storage bag is a great way to keep the tree protected. Artificial Christmas tree storage bags come in a variety of sizes from small to extra-large. Make sure that the storage bag is sized to fit your Christmas tree. Having wheels on the storage bag will help you move the tree much easier. If you want to keep the ornaments and lights on the tree in storage, then you will need a larger storage bag as well as pay attention for any broken lights or ornaments.
If storing the tree fully assembled is in an option, then taking apart the tree for storage is the next best option. Keep the original boxes for the artificial Christmas Tree to use for storage. If the original boxes are not an option, then use a storage bin, duffel bag, or boxes which are large enough to hold all parts of the tree. As you start the disassembly process, remove the top section of the tree first and put aside before placing in a bag or box. Next, take apart the center section of the tree. Compress the branches to preserve the needles and branches as you take apart each piece. Finally loosen the bolts of the tree stand and remove the bottom section of the tree. Place the branches in bags and then in boxes.
Storage for Christmas Tree Ornaments
Many ornaments are handmade by family members or are heirlooms, so they need to be treated and stored with special care. Christmas tree ornaments come in all shapes and sizes and can be difficult to properly store Keep the boxes for larger or oddly shaped ornaments. If you don’t have the boxes, then carefully wrap the ornaments in tissue paper. Layer the ornaments in a box with filler material between each layer. There are also many styles of specially designed ornament boxes that you can find at your local craft stores. Another solution is to create your own box by using a cardboard egg crate to store smaller ornaments.
