This weekend is the unofficial start of summer. Memorial Day weekend is the time to enjoy family picnics and welcome the “lazy hazy” summer days. There are many thing to do in the Savannah area during the summer. Summer is a great time to check out the farmers markets in the area, visit some historical sites or just take a walk along the beach. We have listed just a few of the events taking place in Savannah during the summer. Stay tuned for more events throughout the summer.
Every first weekend of the month is filled with festivals and fun along River Street in Historic Downtown Savannah. June 5th to 7th is the Blues, Jazz and BBQ Festival at Rousakis Riverfront Plaza. Enjoy great food, blues, jazz and fun the entire weekend. River Street host’s Savannah’s Fourth of July Celebration on Saturday July 4th starting at 4pm with music, fireworks and more. August ends the summer festivals with the Dog Days of Summer from August 7th to 8th. This is a dog-friendly event for the entire family including pet portraits, puppy pools and canine parades.
Tybee Island is a perfect escape from the heat and humidity of the summer. In fact, it was created as a summer retreat for the families of Savannah. Tybee Island is a barrier island on the mouth of the Savannah River and Atlantic Ocean. There are many great places to visit on the island including the beach, restaurants and shops, the Pavilion and Pier, the Tybee Lighthouse, and Tybee Marine Science Center.
There is never a dull moment on Tybee Island. There are events planned throughout the year. During the summer on the third Saturday of the month Tybee Island hosts Movies in the Park . Bring the family to enjoy the fun of outdoor movies at Memorial Park.
Tybee Arts Association has bi-monthly art shows and sale at the Tybee Arts Building throughout the summer. The art show and sale will showcase local artisans including paintings, sculpture, jewelry, prints, photography, pottery and much more!
What says summer more than attending a baseball game? The Savannah Sand Gnats are the minor league affiliate of the New York Mets in the South Atlantic League. They play their home games at Historic Grayson Stadium. Minor league baseball games are fun to watch because you can be up close to all of the action. The Sand Gnats have many events throughout the season to help out the community including baseball camps, girl and Boy Scout nights and packing the park for charity. Check out one of their exciting games this season now through late August.
