Your office shouldn’t double as a storage space, so let us help reduce office clutter by choosing one of our business storage units that’s right for you. There are a variety of reasons a business can benefit from business storage. If you are a small law firm or a small accounting firm, you have to keep a lot of important files and documents. Before you know it, paperwork and other documents are piled sky high taking over valuable work space. Business storage units are a great option for keeping your documents you don’t need every day safe, organized, and out of the way.

Tip #1: When packing up your files, remember to organize the documents you will need to access near the front of your business storage unit

For any small business, excess inventory, samples, and supplies can be cumbersome, taking up a lot of storage in your office. Take advantage of one of our convenient climate controlled units to store your pharmaceutical drugs and marketing material. If you are a small retail store, a business storage unit offers a great solution for sorting through inventory and switching out your seasonal items. Stop N Stor offers both climate and non-climate controlled units in various sizes so you can effectively choose the best storage unit that is right for your business.

Tip#2: Keep an itemized record of what you have stored, the quantity of items and where it is packed. Label boxes accordingly.

In addition, there are many reasons why you might need to store your furniture or office supplies throughout the year. Seasonality has a tendency to affect how many hires one business has at a time. If you are in the off-season and have extra furniture and desks crowding your workspace, we offer temporary storage solutions. Or, you may have extra computers or sensitive work equipment that need to be stowed away. If so, then you would benefit from one of our climate controlled storage units to help protect and preserve your office items from outside elements including humidity, pests, and dust.

Tip #3. When packing furniture, protect corners and edges with appropriate packing material. Consider using a climate controlled unit.

Business storage is great for renovation. You may be in the process of remodeling or painting, and need a place to store your items temporarily. If you are a small construction company and you need a place to store your equipment between jobs, we offer drive up units so you can access your equipment with ease. We offer free dollies to assist you with loading and unloading your heavy items. The cost of renting a storage unit is much lower than paying rent and overhead at a storefront or warehouse. Keeping Your Photos Safe While in Storage

[slideshow]

There have been huge developments in how we take and save photos over the years and the technology keeps changing even as I type this blog post. Digital photo taking has become the norm, while film and negative photos are considered to be “old school”.  Many households have old photos that are considered family heirlooms or have many old family photos of vacations and holidays stored around their homes.  How can you store these important family keepsakes to protect them from damage? Due to extreme temperature fluctuations and moisture, do not store your photos in a basement or attic. If you are storing photographs, the best option is to rent a climate-controlled storage unit. To further protect the photos, chose an inside facing storage unit on the second floor of the storage facility if possible. These preventive steps will help protect the photographs while in storage from extreme light fluctuations, dust, dirt and possible insect issues.

When storing photographs, you need to take precaution to protect the photos from damage. Over time and improper handling, photographs can become cracked, brittle and faded. We all have old family photos which are getting harder and hard to see the images. Some older photos can be restored, but it is an expensive and tedious process. In order to protect photos from damage, there are some simple steps to take to make sure that your photos continue to be in your family for years to come.

1. Do not store photos in albums with sticky or magnetic pages. These albums can cause damage to the photos over time. The photos can tear as they stick to the page as well. Store photos in an acid-free photo album that has been made with materials that pass the ANSI IT 9.16 Photographic Activity Test (PAT). Do not store photos in plastic slips with material made from PVC. The PVC omits an odor and can create acids that will damage your photos over time.

2. Do not store your photos in old shoeboxes or envelopes. These boxes contain chemicals that are unsafe for your photos. Use packaging that has been labeled “Photograph safe”. These boxes protect your photos from dust and light exposure. Also, when storing your photos, try to organize the photos by date or special occasion so they can easily be found.

3. In a storage unit, make sure that you place the boxes with the photos higher up to prevent moisture damage. These boxes can be stacked on top of tables or in shelving units.

4. In the digital age, it is important to keep your digital photos safe as well. As a backup, store photos on a CD or DVD and then store these items in a climate controlled storage unit. Label the discs for easy identification. This will make it easier to find the photos that you need. Storing the photos on a disc is a great back-up just in case your computer, where all of your photos are stored, crashes.

With proper storage, your photos will be protected for years to come. Stop N Stor  has climate controlled storage units to help safely secure your priceless photos.

How to Store Vinyl Records, Comic Books and Collectible Books

[slideshow]

Do you have collectible items such as vinyl records, comic books or vintage books cluttering up your space? Self-storage provides the added space that you need to save these treasured items from the garbage bin! There are many collectible items that have increased in value over the years. If you are a regular watcher of Antiques Roadshow  you know that a vintage album or book in good condition could bring the owner hundreds if not thousands of dollars! Who would have thought that vinyl records have become a collector’s item and a must have for disc jockeys and music lovers? E-readers have become a growing force in consumer electronics relegating rare and vintage books to attics and basements. Comic books have always been a collectible item over the years with some special issues being valued at thousands of dollars. How do you store these treasured items to protect them from moisture, heat, dust and vermin damage? The best place to store these items is in a climate-controlled storage unit. Stop n Stor  offers a variety of climate-controlled storage units  to help you pick the best place to store your precious items. If you opt to store your collectibles in a self-storage unit, here are some valuable tips to keep the items in pristine condition.

Buying vinyl records has become “trendy” again for music collectors. Independent bands are putting out vinyl records for sound quality and collection purposes. All the albums that you collected “back in the day” could actually be worth something if you kept them in great condition. To keep your vinyl record collection in the best condition, store them away from heat and light in a climate-controlled storage unit. The optimal way to store the albums is in the upright position in a plastic crate or very sturdy cardboard box. Do not lean the albums or stack the albums when storing as this causes warping and breakage and can damage the cover art. If you are storing the albums in cardboard boxes, do not stack them higher than four boxes high as the pressure on the bottom boxes can cause damage to the items.

Comic books have been collected and stored for decades. In order to protect your comic books from variations in temperature and moisture, do not store them in an attic or a basement! To preserve the comics’ condition, place them in polypropylene sheets with acid-free comic packing boards. Use more expensive Mylar sheets for storing extremely rare and valuable comics. You can find these storage supplies at your local comic bookstore. Also, these stores will carry acid-free comic book storage boxes. These boxes come in either short or long depending on the amount of comic books that you need to store. Like vinyl records, store the comic books upright and don’t stack the boxes too high while in storage.

Books have become a great collector’s item. With the prevalence of e-readers that can store hundreds of books, rare, vintage and first edition books will become even more of a collector’s item. Direct light, heat, humidity and pests are the enemies to rare books. Therefore, storage of the collectible books in a climate controlled storage unit is a must! Do not put books in a plastic bag during storage as this could form moisture in the bag. This moisture will damage the binding and the pages of the books. Store books in boxes with the spines in the upright position. This will help protect the books by putting less pressure on the binding of the books.

If you store your collectibles in the proper way, your will be able to enjoy these treasures for years to come as well as pass them on to future generations of your family! Plus, you never know if one of your pristine vinyl records or comic books might be worth a good sum of money!

Business Self Storage

Renting a self-storage unit is a perfect way to help clear out items that are not used every day, store collectables and store household goods if you are moving or downsizing. But did you know that self-storage has become an ideal storage solution for small home businesses to larger corporations?

Leasing a self-storage unit is a cost-effective way for businesses to store excess inventory, furniture, files or electronics, such as computers and phones. Storing items on a short-term basis is beneficial for companies in transition because of remodeling, relocating or downsizing. However, having extra space to store important documents or files is also valuable for companies over a longer time period. Business owners could also receive a tax write off for expenses incurred in renting a storage unit such as paperwork, materials and general inventory. Also, the cost of moving the items, including supplies and equipment can add up to be deductions on the company’s tax return.

For expanding businesses, instead of leasing or building a larger office space, consider renting a self-storage unit to store those items that are not needed on an everyday basis. The climate controlled storage units are a great alternative to store unneeded everyday equipment such as extra computers, office furniture, archived files and documents and other unused paperwork. Using a climate controlled unit helps protect these items from damage from the elements. Home businesses could use a self-storage unit for a staging area for products and inventory. The storage unit could give that extra space needed for shipping and packing inventory items to be sent to customers.

When selecting the right storage facility for your business, make sure that you plan ahead. Create a list of items that you plan to store in order to know what size storage unit you will need. Stop n Stor offers a variety of storage unit sizes  that could fit any business storage need. For example, if you just need the storage unit to pack small boxes, then a smaller unit size could fit your needs. Pack the items that you will be storing correctly and efficiently in sturdy file boxes or storage boxes. Label the contents of the boxes for easy accessibility and identity purposes. Some self-storage companies are offering special amenities for business storage usage such as larger spaces, special shelving in the units, longer hours and some discounts for long-term rentals. Start to organize and de-clutter your office space today!

Alternative Uses for a Self-Storage Unit

Let’s be honest, self-storage is usually a pretty boring topic. But lately, with the
popularity of storage auctions , people are looking twice at the self-storage industry. There are many purposes for renting a self-storage unit such as moving to a smaller house, being deployed for the military or even just needing extra storage space for personal belongings. But, did you know that some self-storage facilities are offering fun alternatives to the normal “store your household belongings” purpose? Some storage facilities are offering their storage units for band rehearsal spots and others are offering great places to store a wine collection to just name a few new and different uses.

A trend has started that has bands leaving their garages and basements behind and setting
up practice rooms in self-storage units.
While Stop n Stor  does not have the capability to host bands at this time, many storage facilities in “music scene” towns such as Austin and Nashville offer climate controlled units for bands. Some facilities offer electricity, Wi-Fi and even air conditioning to the practicing bands. These practice units work well for the bands as many storage facilities are not in residential areas, so they do not have to worry about their sound levels. Plus, climate controlled storage units are a great place to store instruments, so they will not warp or get damaged.

Another alternative purpose for a storage unit is wine storage. Some wine connoisseurs
do not have the room at their homes to store their wine collection. A self-storage climate controlled unit is perfect to store wine. Certain wines need to be at a set temperature and humidity level and stored for a longer time to reach “maturity”.  The darkness that a
self-storage unit offers is also important in the wine maturity process. Some storage facilities have built special wine storage cabinets in some of their storage units to attract the wine collector. Some of the self-storage facilities even offer hints on how to store the wine.

Self-storage units offer great temporary storage for college students.  The student doesn’t have to take their school items home every summer, which saves on space and time. It’s not quite an alternative purpose, but a self-storage unit could be great for someone who has a home business with lots of product inventory and little space at home. The small business owner could store their inventory in the storage unit and even use the storage space for a staging area for packaging and sending out their product. Self-storage units come in all shapes and sizes  and can be used for many different purposes. How will you utilize your storage space?  Rent your storage unit today!

It’s fall! Time to reorganize and clean your storage unit!

Autumn Leaves

It's Autumn!

Fall/Autumn has finally arrived! We made it through a very hot summer and are ready for the cooler temperatures! Football is back on TV, the trees are changing color and there is a crispness in the air. Fall is also a great time for cleaning! It’s time to store away the summer clothes, lawn mowers and patio furniture. If your home doesn’t have the space for these items, then consider renting a self-storage unit. Stop n Stor has climate controlled and non-climate controlled unit sizes  from 5×5 to 10×30 for all of your storage needs.

As you are doing your home fall cleaning and winter prep, don’t forget to clean your storage unit! The change of seasons is a good time to change the plastic or cardboard covering on your storage unit floor. Also, change out the deodorizers, moisture control devices and vermin bail at this time. Fall cleaning is a perfect opportunity to go through the items in the storage unit and decide if you would like to keep, throw away, sell or donate the items. If you are bringing in new items, make sure that they are properly packed. Stop n Stor offers a range of packing supplies  such as boxes, tape, peanuts and bubble wrap.  As you clean out the unit, rotate the items that you would use more frequently, such as winter clothes, snow blower or shovels, to the front of the storage unit.  Don’t forget to label all of the new boxes that you are storing. Plus, add these boxes to the inventory list of the items in your storage unit.

Below are a few storage tips for prepping storing frequently used summer
items:

1. Make sure summer clothes are clean to protect from staining and vermin.
Pack folded clothes in clear plastic boxes or zippered bags. If you need to
hang the clothing, use sturdy cardboard wardrobe boxes for storage.

2. Drain all fluids from lawn mowers, weed cutters and other outdoor
machinery. Gasoline and other combustible items cannot be stored in a
self-storage unit.

3. Treat leather items with leather conditioner before storage.

4. Remove bags from vacuum cleaners to prevent vermin.

5. Wipe down metal objects and tools with a little oil to prevent rust
from forming.

6. Store lawn tools in a trash can with like items. Tie together rakes,
hoes, shovels and other like items in the trash can. (of course, this is after
you finish raking all of the leaves!)

7. Store patio furniture with the chairs on top of one another to gain
extra storage space. If possible, remove the legs of the patio table and keep
all screws and nuts together in a plastic bag attached to the legs.

Happy Fall/Autumn!! Enjoy the season!

Don’t Let Extreme Weather Damage Your Belongings!

Climate Controlled Units at Stop n Stor, Hinesville

Climate Controlled Units at Stop n Stor, Hinesville

Most of the country has been going through a brutal heat wave this summer. The Savannah, Georgia area is no exception. The area has suffered from an heat index  reaching nearly 115 degrees. In fact, Savannah set a record for most consecutive days at or above 90 degrees with 56 days, which just ended on July 15th. The old record was 44 consecutive days at or above 90 degrees set in 1993. The Savannah area’s weather can be extreme with both heat and humidity during the summer months. If you live in a climate with this type of extreme weather during at least one season, then you need to investigate putting your belongings in a climate controlled storage unit.

How is the extreme heat affecting the items that you have stored in a regular outdoor storage unit? An outdoor storage unit is similar to a garage with its concrete floor and metal walls. If it’s hot outside, then, it is doubly hot inside the unit. Heat and humidity can damage everything from furniture, musical instruments, photos, electronics, to paper documents. If you are a collector of vinyl records, the heat and humidity could warp your albums. The humidity can damage photos and even split wood furniture. The moisture created by the humidity can cause excessive damage to electronic items such as computers, televisions and stereo systems. The humidity also can spur the growth of mold and mildew in a storage unit, especially on cloth and plastic items.  This can form a musty smell on your belongings; that is hard to get rid of. What is the best storage option to protect your items from the extreme weather?

Climate controlled storage units are the best choice for storing items that could be damaged from extreme temperatures. The units are kept cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter to protect the items that are stored. These units are usually inside a building, which is added protected from bugs and other vermin. Climate controlled units will cost more than renting a standard outdoor unit, but the cost can be justified with the protection of your belongings from the damage that the weather can bring. Stop n Stor offers climate controlled units at 4 locations.  Stop n Stor recently celebrated the grand opening of the nearly 300 climate controlled units at our Highway 196, EG Miles Parkway, Hinesville location. Self Storage Security-One of the Most Important Elements in Choosing Your Storage Unit!

We’ve looked at how to choose a storage facility and some packing and storage tips, but there is one very important topic that we haven’t touched upon yet: self-storage security. This is one of the most important factors when searching for the best self-storage facility. Depending on if you are storing furniture, artwork, or business paperwork, a safe and secure storage facility should be a crucial part of storage unit renting process. Plus, as a renter, you want to feel safe when you visit your storage unit. There are many components to having proper self-storage security. There are certain things to look for when you are renting your unit such as lighting, video surveillance, well-maintained facility and access to the units.

First Impressions are a key component in self-storage facility security. A clean and well-maintained storage compound shows that the management is a critical part of the security of the facility. Stop N Stor  has on-site management.  A well-lit storage facility is a must!  This is especially important for indoor storage units. Most self-storage companies have concrete walls or security fencing to protect you and your belongings. 24 gated-access is another safety and security option that Stop N Stor offers to their customers.

Another item on your security checklist would be to look for closed caption television systems. Stop N Stor offers a 24 hour surveillance video camera system that is state-of-the-art. Most of our sites have the state-of-the art 30 video cameras. These cameras are placed both indoors and outdoors in each row of storage units. These cameras are set up with DVR back-up for added security.

Most storage facilities require that you provide your own unit lock. Make sure that you give an extra key to the site management in case of emergencies. Also, limit access to the unit to a few people. Some storage facilities will require a list of the people with access to the unit for added security.  Remember to lock up your belongings and do not give access to your unit to people who you do not know. Stop N Stor offers key pad unit access and anti-pick locks to further protect your belongings.

There are many sites that will offer more self-storage security tips including http://www.storitz.com/ andwww.storagefront.com.

It’s moving-in day for your self-storage unit

Storage Unit

Inside a storage unit-from smallnotebook.org

The boxes are packed, the right size storage unit  is rented and your self-storage unit is prepped . It’s moving-in day for your self-storage unit! How should you arrange your belongings to maximize the space in your storage unit? How should furniture be stored?

Having an easy move-in day is easy if you following some of these tips:

  1. After you lay down some protective canvas sheeting or linens on the ground, start loading your items in the unit.
  2. Store the heavy items at the bottom with the lighter boxes and items on top. Stack boxes and similarly sized items together to save space.
  3. Store the largest items around the edge and the back of the storage unit.
  4. Leave enough room to get around the storage unit.  If it is possible, leave an aisle way around the exterior walls of the unit. This will help the air circulate around the unit and prevent mold and mildew from developing.
  5. Fill the drawers of dressers and cabinets with clothes, linens and small boxes.
  6. Use the open spaces in washers, dryers and refrigerators for storing linens, pillows and small boxes to utilize all the extra space. Remember to leave the refrigerator door propped open to prevent moisture from developing in the appliance.
  7. Take apart tables that you are storing. Wrap the legs of the tables together with bubble wrap. Place the screws and bolts from the table in a small plastic bag and attach them to the legs or table backing.
  8. Stand sofas up-right for added space. Do not stack heavy items on furniture.
  9. Dismantle bed frames. Wrap the pieces in linens or bubble wrap for extra protection. Place the screws and bolts in a plastic bag and attach them to the frames, so they will not get lost.
  10. Chairs can be stacked seat to seat to save space.
  11. Tie tools, rakes, brooms and snow shovels together and place in a garbage can for easy storage.
  12. Don’t forget to make a map of your storage unit for easily accessibility to your belongings! This also will help as an inventory list when you move out of the self-storage unit!
