Renting a self-storage unit is a perfect way to help clear out items that are not used every day, store collectables and store household goods if you are moving or downsizing. But did you know that self-storage has become an ideal storage solution for small home businesses to larger corporations?
Leasing a self-storage unit is a cost-effective way for businesses to store excess inventory, furniture, files or electronics, such as computers and phones. Storing items on a short-term basis is beneficial for companies in transition because of remodeling, relocating or downsizing. However, having extra space to store important documents or files is also valuable for companies over a longer time period. Business owners could also receive a tax write off for expenses incurred in renting a storage unit such as paperwork, materials and general inventory. Also, the cost of moving the items, including supplies and equipment can add up to be deductions on the company’s tax return.
For expanding businesses, instead of leasing or building a larger office space, consider renting a self-storage unit to store those items that are not needed on an everyday basis. The climate controlled storage units are a great alternative to store unneeded everyday equipment such as extra computers, office furniture, archived files and documents and other unused paperwork. Using a climate controlled unit helps protect these items from damage from the elements. Home businesses could use a self-storage unit for a staging area for products and inventory. The storage unit could give that extra space needed for shipping and packing inventory items to be sent to customers.
When selecting the right storage facility for your business, make sure that you plan ahead. Create a list of items that you plan to store in order to know what size storage unit you will need. Stop n Stor offers a variety of storage unit sizes that could fit any business storage need. For example, if you just need the storage unit to pack small boxes, then a smaller unit size could fit your needs. Pack the items that you will be storing correctly and efficiently in sturdy file boxes or storage boxes. Label the contents of the boxes for easy accessibility and identity purposes. Some self-storage companies are offering special amenities for business storage usage such as larger spaces, special shelving in the units, longer hours and some discounts for long-term rentals. Start to organize and de-clutter your office space today!
Let’s be honest, self-storage is usually a pretty boring topic. But lately, with the
popularity of storage auctions , people are looking twice at the self-storage industry. There are many purposes for renting a self-storage unit such as moving to a smaller house, being deployed for the military or even just needing extra storage space for personal belongings. But, did you know that some self-storage facilities are offering fun alternatives to the normal “store your household belongings” purpose? Some storage facilities are offering their storage units for band rehearsal spots and others are offering great places to store a wine collection to just name a few new and different uses.
A trend has started that has bands leaving their garages and basements behind and setting
up practice rooms in self-storage units. While Stop n Stor does not have the capability to host bands at this time, many storage facilities in “music scene” towns such as Austin and Nashville offer climate controlled units for bands. Some facilities offer electricity, Wi-Fi and even air conditioning to the practicing bands. These practice units work well for the bands as many storage facilities are not in residential areas, so they do not have to worry about their sound levels. Plus, climate controlled storage units are a great place to store instruments, so they will not warp or get damaged.
Another alternative purpose for a storage unit is wine storage. Some wine connoisseurs
do not have the room at their homes to store their wine collection. A self-storage climate controlled unit is perfect to store wine. Certain wines need to be at a set temperature and humidity level and stored for a longer time to reach “maturity”. The darkness that a
self-storage unit offers is also important in the wine maturity process. Some storage facilities have built special wine storage cabinets in some of their storage units to attract the wine collector. Some of the self-storage facilities even offer hints on how to store the wine.
Self-storage units offer great temporary storage for college students. The student doesn’t have to take their school items home every summer, which saves on space and time. It’s not quite an alternative purpose, but a self-storage unit could be great for someone who has a home business with lots of product inventory and little space at home. The small business owner could store their inventory in the storage unit and even use the storage space for a staging area for packaging and sending out their product. Self-storage units come in all shapes and sizes and can be used for many different purposes. How will you utilize your storage space? Rent your storage unit today!
This past Saturday, October 15, 2011, was a perfect day to have a storage unit auction!
Stop n Stor was the “place to be” to find unknown treasures and have fun. There were a total of 38 storage units that were auctioned between our 4 facilities in Hinesville . The bidding process started at 9am at our 245 W. General Screvan Way facility and ended the auction at our 1049 Kacey Drive location. Professional auctioneer, Terry, led the bidding process and kept the auction running smoothly. The bidding process has to be seen to be believed! Our regional manager, Lisa Wilkerson, mentioned that she has been doing the auctions at the Stop n Stor facilities for over 4 years and has never seen the crowd or the bidding like it was at this auction in Hinesville! There were over 100 people who participated in the auction coming from as far as South Carolina and Waycross, Georgia! The attendees included some of our “regulars” as well as many, many newcomers!
At the beginning of last month, Stop n Stor held a self-storage auction for our Port Wentworth and Savannah facilities. There was a great turn out of current customers, new bidders and veteran auction goers. On Saturday, October 15th, it is our Hinesville facilities’ turn to share in the excitement! The self-storage unit auction begins at 9:00am at the 245 W. General Screvan Way location. Once the bidding has been completed at this facility, the proceedings moves to the 196 Highway, EG Miles Parkway site. After 196, we will proceed to Kacey Drives alternate location at 1018 West Oglethorpe Hwy (old A-1) and our last stop for the auction will be at the 1049 Kacey Drive location. There could be at least 50 units from the 3 Hinesville facilities that will be auctioned that day.
The auction is cash only and it will be an open bidding system for the entire contents of
the storage unit. The bidders will get a chance to look inside the unit before the bidding begins. There will be a professional auctioneer in charge of the bidding process. Stop n Stor’s regional manager and facility managers will also be available during the auction for any questions. Once the bidder wins the storage unit auction, they will have 48 hours to clean out the storage unit.
Self-storage auctions have become more and more popular. You can find out where to find
auctions in your area at the following websites: www.storageauction.net, www.storagetreasures.com and www.storageunitauctionlist.com. For those new to the storage auction world, there are a few things that are “must haves” for the day of the auction: don’t forget to bring cash, a flashlight to look in the storage units, gloves, a padlock to lock up the items that were just purchased, garbage bags and moving supplies to transport the new treasures.
Fall/Autumn has finally arrived! We made it through a very hot summer and are ready for the cooler temperatures! Football is back on TV, the trees are changing color and there is a crispness in the air. Fall is also a great time for cleaning! It’s time to store away the summer clothes, lawn mowers and patio furniture. If your home doesn’t have the space for these items, then consider renting a self-storage unit. Stop n Stor has climate controlled and non-climate controlled unit sizes from 5×5 to 10×30 for all of your storage needs.
As you are doing your home fall cleaning and winter prep, don’t forget to clean your storage unit! The change of seasons is a good time to change the plastic or cardboard covering on your storage unit floor. Also, change out the deodorizers, moisture control devices and vermin bail at this time. Fall cleaning is a perfect opportunity to go through the items in the storage unit and decide if you would like to keep, throw away, sell or donate the items. If you are bringing in new items, make sure that they are properly packed. Stop n Stor offers a range of packing supplies such as boxes, tape, peanuts and bubble wrap. As you clean out the unit, rotate the items that you would use more frequently, such as winter clothes, snow blower or shovels, to the front of the storage unit. Don’t forget to label all of the new boxes that you are storing. Plus, add these boxes to the inventory list of the items in your storage unit.
Below are a few storage tips for prepping storing frequently used summer
1. Make sure summer clothes are clean to protect from staining and vermin.
Pack folded clothes in clear plastic boxes or zippered bags. If you need to
hang the clothing, use sturdy cardboard wardrobe boxes for storage.
2. Drain all fluids from lawn mowers, weed cutters and other outdoor
machinery. Gasoline and other combustible items cannot be stored in a
3. Treat leather items with leather conditioner before storage.
4. Remove bags from vacuum cleaners to prevent vermin.
5. Wipe down metal objects and tools with a little oil to prevent rust
6. Store lawn tools in a trash can with like items. Tie together rakes,
hoes, shovels and other like items in the trash can. (of course, this is after
you finish raking all of the leaves!)
7. Store patio furniture with the chairs on top of one another to gain
extra storage space. If possible, remove the legs of the patio table and keep
all screws and nuts together in a plastic bag attached to the legs.
Happy Fall/Autumn!! Enjoy the season!
Saturday, September 3, 2011 was a great day for our self-storage auction at two Stop n
Stor locations. The festivities started at our Savannah location at 10am. Professional auctioneer, Terry, directed the festivities at both locations. There were 11 units at the
Savannah location that were auctioned. The next stop was the Port Wentworth
facility . There were 9 units at this location that were auctioned. We had a great crowd of bidders. There were also past and current customers in the crowd that were interested to see how self-storage auctions work! Check our Facebook page, Twitter page and this blog for information on future auctions at our Hinesville locations. Thanks to everyone who participated in the auction!
It’s that time of year again. It is the three words that kids dread to hear: “Back to School”. Wasn’t it only a few weeks ago that school was letting out for the summer? Get ready for football games, homecomings and the changing of the seasons! The schools in the Liberty and Chatham Counties will be starting back in the next few weeks. In fact, Liberty County Schools start back on Thursday, August 4, 2011. The Savannah-Chatham County schools start back on August 22nd, except for Groves High School, which starts on August 8, 2011. The 3 elementary schools at Ft. Stewart also start back on August, 8, 2011.
Savannah area colleges and universities will start their classes in the next few weeks. It is hard to believe that it is time for the fall semester to start again! Armstrong Atlantic State University begins their fall semester on August 15, 2011. Savannah State University starts classes on August 11, 2011. The Savannah School of Art and Design starts their classes later on September 12, 2011.
How does self-storage and back to school time complement each other? Self storage is a perfect match for college students. Students can store their personal belongings in a self-storage facility near their college or university. This alleviates the need to move the items collected over the school year back and forth from home when the semester or school year is over. Students tend to accumulate lots of memorabilia over the course of their school year. Having a self-storage unit gives the student a sense of privacy and security for their belongings that they just might not get when they have to move the items home. Self-storage facilities offer a flexible (month-to-month) renting schedule which is perfect for students who could just be storing their items for a few months. Renting a self-storage unit is a perfect solution for students who are traveling abroad for a semester or a year. Also, the time after college graduation is a time of major transitions for students. Recent graduates can store the items from their college dormitories or apartments in storage units until they get “settled” into their new jobs, apartments or cities. Storing items for a few months in between semesters or even post-graduation is the ideal solution for college students’ transitional needs.
Stop n Stor wishes all students a safe, enjoyable and happy school year!
Most of the country has been going through a brutal heat wave this summer. The Savannah, Georgia area is no exception. The area has suffered from an heat index reaching nearly 115 degrees. In fact, Savannah set a record for most consecutive days at or above 90 degrees with 56 days, which just ended on July 15th. The old record was 44 consecutive days at or above 90 degrees set in 1993. The Savannah area’s weather can be extreme with both heat and humidity during the summer months. If you live in a climate with this type of extreme weather during at least one season, then you need to investigate putting your belongings in a climate controlled storage unit.
How is the extreme heat affecting the items that you have stored in a regular outdoor storage unit? An outdoor storage unit is similar to a garage with its concrete floor and metal walls. If it’s hot outside, then, it is doubly hot inside the unit. Heat and humidity can damage everything from furniture, musical instruments, photos, electronics, to paper documents. If you are a collector of vinyl records, the heat and humidity could warp your albums. The humidity can damage photos and even split wood furniture. The moisture created by the humidity can cause excessive damage to electronic items such as computers, televisions and stereo systems. The humidity also can spur the growth of mold and mildew in a storage unit, especially on cloth and plastic items. This can form a musty smell on your belongings; that is hard to get rid of. What is the best storage option to protect your items from the extreme weather?
Climate controlled storage units are the best choice for storing items that could be damaged from extreme temperatures. The units are kept cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter to protect the items that are stored. These units are usually inside a building, which is added protected from bugs and other vermin. Climate controlled units will cost more than renting a standard outdoor unit, but the cost can be justified with the protection of your belongings from the damage that the weather can bring. Stop n Stor offers climate controlled units at 4 locations. Stop n Stor recently celebrated the grand opening of the nearly 300 climate controlled units at our Highway 196, EG Miles Parkway, Hinesville location. See how to rent from Stop n Stor on our latest commercial .
We’ve looked at how to choose a storage facility and some packing and storage tips, but there is one very important topic that we haven’t touched upon yet: self-storage security. This is one of the most important factors when searching for the best self-storage facility. Depending on if you are storing furniture, artwork, or business paperwork, a safe and secure storage facility should be a crucial part of storage unit renting process. Plus, as a renter, you want to feel safe when you visit your storage unit. There are many components to having proper self-storage security. There are certain things to look for when you are renting your unit such as lighting, video surveillance, well-maintained facility and access to the units.
First Impressions are a key component in self-storage facility security. A clean and well-maintained storage compound shows that the management is a critical part of the security of the facility. Stop N Stor has on-site management. A well-lit storage facility is a must! This is especially important for indoor storage units. Most self-storage companies have concrete walls or security fencing to protect you and your belongings. 24 gated-access is another safety and security option that Stop N Stor offers to their customers.
Another item on your security checklist would be to look for closed caption television systems. Stop N Stor offers a 24 hour surveillance video camera system that is state-of-the-art. Most of our sites have the state-of-the art 30 video cameras. These cameras are placed both indoors and outdoors in each row of storage units. These cameras are set up with DVR back-up for added security.
Most storage facilities require that you provide your own unit lock. Make sure that you give an extra key to the site management in case of emergencies. Also, limit access to the unit to a few people. Some storage facilities will require a list of the people with access to the unit for added security. Remember to lock up your belongings and do not give access to your unit to people who you do not know. Stop N Stor offers key pad unit access and anti-pick locks to further protect your belongings.
Did you know that there is an entire industry building around self-storage unit auctions? These auctions have become a popular hobby and even livelihoods for people. There are two reality shows, Storage Wars on A&E and Auction Hunters on Spike. Each of these shows depicts the gamble and high risk that is involved in self-storage unit auctions. In fact, these shows have become so popular that have both been renewed for new seasons. What is the story behind an actual storage unit auction? Why do the belongings in a storage unit go up for auction? What are the different types of bidding in this type of auction and how does it make money for the buyers?
A self-storage unit can go up for auction if the renter has not paid the rent of the unit in a specified time. Each state has different laws about the auctioning of personal belongings stored in a storage unit. Information about the possible auction of the items in a unit should be written in the rental contract. Make sure that this contract is read and understood when you are renting a storage unit. Auctions can be advertised in local newspapers, online or on special websites such as storagetreasures.com , if you live in California on storageauctions.com or storageauctions.net to just name a few.
There are three different types of storage unit bidding: live, blind and sealed bid. The live bidding will be on the site of the unit (s). The bidders will get anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes to look at the contents of the unit before an auctioneer will start the bidding process. A blind bid is where the buyers do not see the content of the unit at all. They make general bids and the highest bid wins. The winner is the only person to see the contents of the storage unit after they win it. Obviously, this type of bidding is extremely risky. The last type of bidding is the sealed bid. The facility manager will allow a buyer a limited time to see the contents of the unit and then take bids in a sealed envelope. The highest bid wins the contents of the unit. Once the winner of the bidding is announced, they have a limited time (usually up to 48 hours) to remove items from the storage unit. You can read more information about the entire process here.
As show on Storage Wars or Auction Hunters bidding on storage units can be quite the gamble. You never know what can be found in a storage unit! It could be a treasure or it could be junk. If you think that and item could be of worth, make sure that it professionally appraised. The buyers on Storage Wars are either collectors or owners of thrift or second-hand stores, so they are looking for value and future profit.
Stop N Stor does participate in self-storage unit auctions. The auctions would take place on one day for all of the Hinesville locations up to 40 units could be auctioned in one day. Stop N Stor uses the live bidding process with cash only payments. There are also auctions for the Port Wentworth and Savannah locations, but they are less frequent. Keep an eye out on our twitter page and Facebook page for announcement of future auctions.
