Thanksgiving is a time for family, lots of food and football. Even though this is a national holiday, each region of the country does have their own special traditions for their celebrations. Many families start their days watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, while the food preparation starts to get in full swing. There are professional football games as well as localized and family football games on Thanksgiving. There are two NFL football games that day. The Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys traditionally host games on Thanksgiving. This year the Detroit Lions will take on Superbowl Champions, Green Bay Packers. The later game will be The Dallas Cowboys hosting the Buffalo Bills.
The Savannah area also has its own traditions on Thanksgiving Day and for the entire holiday weekend. The 3rd annual Unity Way Turkey Day Run, sponsored by Southcoast Medical Group , will take place at Daffin Park. The festivities, including a kids run and “diaper dash”, starts off at 8am. All proceeds from the race benefit the United Way of The Coastal Empire. Savannah kicks off the Holly Days events with the 11th Annual Boat Parade of Lights on Saturday, November 26, 2011. This event is sponsored by the Savannah Harbor Foundation. Festively decorated boats will cruise the Savannah River followed by fireworks.
The most important tradition of the day is the food! A feast is the central reason for
the holiday. In the past, this holiday was created to celebrate a bountiful harvest. There are the basic food dishes with any Thanksgiving dinner: turkey, stuffing, potatoes and pies. Savannah area families take these traditional dishes and turn them into masterpieces. The area is full of tidal marshes and rivers that provide the region with a bounty of oysters. Oysters have become a stable of the Thanksgiving dinner either as an appetizer, soup or part of a cornbread oyster stuffing. Recipes for oyster dressings have been handed down
for generations. Sweet potato casserole or sweet potato pie are must haves for any Thanksgiving dinner. Savannah’s own, Paula Dean is well-known for her down home cooking. She lists her favorite Thanksgiving family dishes every year.
As we take the time to reflect and give thanks for the past year, don’t forget to think
